This week on Dezeen<\/a>, RIAS announced four buildings in contention for this year’s Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award<\/a>, including a bridge clad with local granite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also on the shortlist were the restoration of a remote 16th-century tower, a teaching hub at the University of Edinburgh and a\u00a0public space regeneration project.<\/p>\n

\"UFC<\/a>
Visuals of a UFC arena on the White House’s South Lawn were unveiled<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Also this week, renders of a mixed martial arts\u00a0arena on the South Lawn<\/a> of the White House in Washington DC were released by UFC president Dana White.<\/p>\n

Set to be built for a UFC fight in 2026, the stadium will feature seats for around 5,000 spectators surrounding an octagonal arena, with a light-covered arch spanning overhead.<\/p>\n

\"Upholstered<\/a>
Donald Trump declared a tariff on upholstered furniture<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In other news for the USA, president Donald Trump’s announcement of a 30 per cent tariff on upholstered furniture<\/a> imported into the country, which will come into effect on 1 October.<\/p>\n

He also announced a 50 per cent tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, aiming to limit the amount of furniture coming into the USA from other countries.<\/p>\n

\"Gstaad<\/a>
Foster + Partners revealed plans for a sinuous timber building in Gstaad<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

British studio\u00a0Foster + Partners revealed a curved timber design<\/a> for the Gstaad House showroom in Switzerland, with\u00a0gallery and auction space arranged around a three-storey car ramp.<\/p>\n

The sinuous building was designed to mimic the winding roads nearby and the contours of the surrounding mountains and valleys.<\/p>\n

\"Excavation<\/a>
A medieval church tower was suspended over a construction site<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

As part of the construction works for the 50 Fenchurch Street skyscraper in London, a 700-year-old church tower was propped 14 metres<\/a> above an excavation site on four steel columns.<\/p>\n

The medieval structure will become the centre piece of a public outdoor space upon completion of the skyscraper, which was designed by architecture studio\u00a0Eric Parry Architects.<\/p>\n

A green-toned social housing block was among the popular projects this week<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Projects that caught readers’ attention this week include a pastel green social housing complex<\/a> in Barcelona, a compact house in Melbourne<\/a> and a series of mirrored cabins in Oregon<\/a>.<\/p>\n
